Night Market Nightmare
Night market food may taste great to Taiwanese people, but to foreigners it can be very frightening. Taiwan’s most famous food is stinky tofu. You may say it’s delicious, but the smell often makes foreigners feel sick. And this is only one of many foods that worry them. Pig blood cake, chicken feet, duck heads, and animal organs make their heads spin.
By the way, there are also foreign foods that Taiwanese people are not very interested in eating, such as cheese. There are many kinds of cheese, and some make stinky tofu smell good. There are also many strange spices that are a little scary if you haven’t heard of them before.
Foreign friends might have you try their food, and you might have them try yours. Trying new foods can sometimes be scary, but it can also be exciting! Maybe you’ll find that they are not such a nightmare after all.

Tea and Teeth
If you choose to drink black tea instead of Coke, good for you! Why? Scientists knew that green tea was good for us in many ways. Now, they think that black tea may be just as good.
Black tea can kill the bacteria that cause cavities in teeth. It also stops bacteria from sticking together to hurt teeth. So then, not only does black tea control mouth bacteria, but it also does not hurt teeth as Coke does. Coke has acid that breaks down tooth enamel. Tea does not have this kind of acid. Also, many people put milk in their tea. Milk has calcium which makes teeth strong.
Of course, we still need to brush our teeth every day. However, the next time we go to the tea shop, our teeth may thank us!

Thanks, Teachers
About 2,500 years ago, there was a very wise man who lived in China. He was a teacher, and his name was Confucius. Confucius was very strict, but he was also very fair. At that time, poor children were not allowed to go to school. However, Confucius was different and didn’t care what social class his students came from. He would accept all students, as long as they were willing to work hard. In doing so, Confucius’ wisdom was shared with many people, and so it has been remembered for thousands of years.
Because Confucius was the greatest teacher of all, his birthday is now the day on which we remember and honor all teachers. Every September 28th, many people go to the Confucius Temple to show their respect for teachers. You still have school on Teacher’s Day, and so do your teachers. So, remember to say thanks to your teachers in person.
