A Working Gorilla
One day the oldest gorilla in the city zoo died. The zookeeper couldn’t find a new gorilla, so he hired an out-of-work mime to dress up in order to act like a gorilla. The mime was happy with his new job. “This is the greatest job for me! The pay is good. I can sleep if I want, and I can make fun of people. It’s great to be a gorilla!”
However, the crowd soon got bored of him. Everyone was paying more attention to the newest animal in the zoo—the lion in the next cage. The mime did not want to lose his job, so he climbed out of his cage and swung from the top of the lion’s cage. This made the lion angry, but the crowd just loved it. The next day the owner of the zoo gave the mime a raise. He thought, “This sure is the best job ever.”
One afternoon, the mime was swinging over the angry lion as usual. Suddenly, he lost his grip and fell into the lion’s cage. The lion stared at the mime angrily and began to move toward him. The mime was the most frightened ever. “I don’t want to die!” he thought. “But if I have to, I want to die as a man, not a gorilla.” Then the mime started screaming, “Help me! Help!”
With a loud roar, the lion quickly jumped on the mime. “You are the biggest fool. Shut up, will you?” said the lion. “Do you want to get us both fired?”

Eat, My Fine Coat!
Gordon has been working in his garden since early morning. In the afternoon, the mayor came by and spoke to Gordon, “Tonight I will have a dinner party with many important guests. Don’t be late!” Gordon was happy to be invited by his friend, the mayor, but he had a lot of work to do in the garden. So he kept working until sunset. Mud was all over his clothes, and Gordon decided that he did not have enough time to clean up, so he just ran straight to the mayor’s house.
Gordon wasn’t late for the party, but he was panting and dripping with sweat. He was greeted by no one. The mayor saw Gordon. But he didn’t say hello and sat Gordon far away from the most important guests. Nobody spoke to him.
Before dinner was served, Gordon sneaked out and hurried home. He washed himself from head to toe. He put on his best suit and a brand new coat. He entered the mayor’s house. The mayor jumped up from the table and said, “Welcome! Sit here, beside me!”
Finally, the main dish was brought in by the servants. Gordon put it into his coat pocket.
The mayor surprisingly said, “What are you doing?”
“I am feeding this fine guest!” Gordon said, “I came in my gardening clothes, and nothing was said to me. I was ignored by everyone. But in this coat, you make me the guest of honor. I was the same person both times. Since the coat is your guest of honor, it must have some of this delicious food!”

I’d Better Walk
An old farmer named Jim had to take some wheat to the mill where he gets it ground into flour. He loaded four sacks full of wheat onto his donkey.
His neighbor saw him far away and thought, “I wonder where Jim is going. Let’s see if he can do me a favor.” He yelled, “Jim! Are you going to the mill?”
“Yes, I’m on my way.” Jim answered.
“Could you take my wheat, too?” Jim couldn’t refuse what his neighbor was asking. His donkey has been carrying his own four sacks, so he had to take another donkey to carry his neighbor’s wheat.
Then another friend saw him and asked if Jim could take his wheat, too. Jim agreed and so he took another donkey, and then another neighbor came, and another. In the end, he has had nine more donkeys loaded down with sacks of wheat. This has given him a total of ten donkeys.
Jim was riding his own donkey but he looked ridiculous on the road with all those other ones too! He yelled at the other donkeys all the way. It was hard to keep them all together. Jim decided to count the donkeys. He counted only nine.
“Where’s my donkey? There should be ten!” Jim was surprised when he found out one animal was missing. He got off his donkey and counted again. This time there were ten. He got back on his donkey and continued on his way.
On the way to the mill, Jim decided to count the donkeys again. There were only nine again. He got off his donkey and counted them again. This time, there were ten. Finally, Jim said, “I’d better walk. Every time I ride my donkey, one is missing!”

The Purple Suit
There is a shopkeeper selling men’s clothing on a busy street. One day a proud and fashionable middle-aged man walks into the shop. The shopkeeper smiles and says, “Good afternoon, sir.”
“Good afternoon,” the gentleman answers. “There is a purple suit in your window. Please take it down for me.”
“Right away, sir,” the shopkeeper says. “I am happy to do that for you.”
Then the shopkeeper thinks, “Good. I’m so glad to sell this suit. There are many suits in the window and he picks this ugly, expensive, purple one. Lucky me!”
“Sir, do you want me to wrap it up?” the shopkeeper says happily.
“Oh, no. There is a misunderstanding. I don’t want it at all,” the gentleman answers. “I just want you to take the suit out of your window. Every day I pass your shop and I can’t stand seeing the ugly thing in the window anymore!”

Driving Home
One morning, a police officer knocked on a door. A middle-aged man answered the door and he looked very tired.
“Sir, were you drinking and driving late last night?” the police officer asked.
The man sounded angry and told the police officer, “NO, I was sleeping at home all night.”
But the man smelled like alcohol. The police officer asked again, “Are you sure you were not drinking and driving last night?”
Again, the man replied, “Yes, I’m sure, Officer. Because I was at home all night.”
“Well, then, can you please take me to your garage?” the officer asked.
“Sure, officer,” the man started to feel confused and he said, “but it won’t help.”
As they opened the man’s garage, the man looked surprised to see a police car parked there.
“Last night, I stopped you speeding,” the police officer said. “And while I was writing you a ticket for drunk driving, you stole my police car.”

You’ll Get Used to It!
A very rich man from a small town died one day. He left all his money to his 18-year-old son. Because the boy was so young, he didn’t manage the money very well. He bought the best clothes, paid for the best food, and always had many friends around him. He wasted money on beautiful cars, gave away expensive gifts, and spent his time playing all day long.
One day he was broke. It cost him too much to pay for everything. He was so sad. He had no more money and no more friends. The young man paid a visit to the town mayor.
“Sir,” he said. “What will I do? I have no money and my friends all left.”
“Don’t worry,” said the mayor. “Soon you will be happy again.”
“Am I going to be rich again?” the boy asked the mayor.
“No, I didn’t say that,” answered the mayor. “Money isn’t everything, young man. You will be happy again once you get used to being poor.”

The Boy Who Cried Wolf
The boy has to watch the sheep every day. One day, he is bored. “I want some fun, ”he thinks. Suddenly, he gets an idea. He yells as loud as he can, “A wolf! A wolf! A wolf is coming. He wants to eat the sheep!”
The people in the village run to save the sheep, but the boy laughs and says, “Just kidding!” The next day, the boy does the same thing. When the people run to save the sheep, the boy laughs at them and says, “Ha, ha! Just kidding again!” The boy keeps playing this trick again and again. At last, the people say, “He is a liar. Don’t believe him.”
Finally, one day, the boy sees a REAL wolf! But when he calls for help, no one comes to save them. Of course, the wolf eats all of the boy’s sheep.

The Fox and the Goat
A fox falls into a well. He tries to get out, but he can’t. A thirsty goat walks by. He looks at the fox and asks, “How’s the water down there?” The fox answers, “The water is so sweet. You have to try it yourself.”
The goat jumps into the well without thinking. After he drinks enough, he looks around and tries to find the way out. He asks the fox, “How do we get out of the well?” The fox says, “I have an idea. Let me climb onto your back and jump out. After I get out, I can help you climb out, too”
The goat does what the fox says. The fox jumps out and walks away. The goat yells for help loudly. The fox looks back down into the well and says, “Never jump in unless you know how to get out again!”

The Milkmaid and Her Pail
A farmer’s daughter milks the cows every morning. One day after she milks the cows, she carries the pail on her head. On her way home, she starts to think, “The milk in the pail can give me some cream. I can make the cream into butter. Then, I can sell the butter and buy some eggs. After the eggs hatch, I will have chickens. Then, I can sell the chickens to buy a beautiful dress. All the young men will fall in love with me when they see me. But, I will turn my head away and say nothing to them.”
The girl turns her head away. She forgets all about the pail on her head. The pail falls, and all the milk is spilled. Now her dreams are all gone.
